PEACE SONG 3


Esta es la tercera entrega de "Canciones de Paz", también conocidas como anti-guerra.

1.- Little Boy Soldiers - The Jam

Tema incluído en el cuarto larga duración de los británicos The Jam titulado "Setting Sons" (1979). Se trata de un álbum conceptual que involucra a 3 amigos que vienen de una guerra. Una parte importante de la letra de esta canción es:

"I'm up on the hills, playing little boy soldiers / Reconnaissance duty up at 5:30 / Shoot shoot shoot and kill the natives / You're one of us and we love you for that."

El LP subió hasta el casillero 4 en la lista oficial británica.


2.- War Pigs - Black Sabbath (1970)

El Heavy Metal se caracteriza por incluir lo satánico en sus canciones. De eso trata esta canción del grupo británico Black Sabbath. Según la banda, el título original era "Walpurgis" que significa "la navidad para los satánicos". Pero la compañía discográfica Warner Bros. Records lo cambió a "War Pigs". Desde entonces, este tema se ha tratado como una canción protesta o anti-guerra. Las primeras líneas dicen:

"Generals gathered in their masses / Just like witches at black masses / Evil minds that plot destruction / Sorcerer's of death's construction."

El single fue más exitoso en las listas Rock de UK (puesto 4) y USA (puesto 15).


3.- Universal Soldier - Buffy Sainte-Marie (1964)

Buffy Sainte-Marie es una cantante y compositora norteamericana famosa por participar en la creación de la canción "Up Where We Belong", tema de la película Oficial y Caballero. El cantante escocés Donovan hizo su versión de "Universal Soldier" en 1965 y es la más conocida. Las últimas líneas, resumen la canción de Buffy.

"He's the Universal Soldier / and he really is to blame / His orders come from far away no more / They come from him and you and me / and brothers can't you see / this is not the way to put an end to war."


4.- The Unknown Soldier - The Doors (1968)

El líder de The Doors, Jim Morrison, se inspiró en una visita a un monumento norteamericano llamado "La Tumba Del Soldado Desconocido", para escribir esta canción perteneciente a su tercer álbum titulado "Waiting For The Sun". En la letra utiliza la palabra "grave" en lugar de "tomb".

"Make a grave for the unknown soldier / Nestled in your hollow shoulder / The unknown soldier."

El single alcanzó el puesto 39 en Billboard.


5.- War Party - Eddy Grant

En 1982, el músico Eddy Grant. lanza el que sería el más famoso de sus LPs, "Killer On The Rampage". De aquí salieron los famosos "Electric Avenue" y "I Don't Wanna Dance". En "War Party", Grant habla de quienes no están de acuerdo en participar en una guerra.

"You invite me to a war party / Me no want to go / Everybody seem to be inviting me to a war party / Me no want to go."


6.- Sky Pilot - Eric Burdon and The Animals (1968)

Eric Burdon and The Animals es un grupo británico famoso internacionalmente por su versión de "The House Of The Rising Sun". La letra de "Sky Pilot", narra cómo un capellán militar da su bendición a las tropas previo a su enfrentamiento.

"He blesses the boys as they stand in life / The smell of gun grease and their bayonets they shine / He's here to help them all that he can / To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man."


7.- Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits (1985)

Esta canción comparte título con el quinto LP del grupo británico de Rock, Dire Straits. Este tema anti-guerra es favorito en funerales militares. Su máxima posición en UK fue la 16. Parte de la letra dice:

"So make it rain / Brothers in arms they will run / They color up the rainbow / That bangs on the drums."


8.- Disposable Heroes - Metallica (1986)

"Master Of Puppets" es uno de los álbumes más importantes del grupo norteamericano de Heavy Metal, Metallica. Esta canción de más de 8 minutos de duración, narra el destino de un joven soldado. En las primeras líneas, James Hetfield escribe:

"Bodies fill the fields I see, hungry heroes end / No one to play soldier now, no one to pretend / Running blind through killing fields, bred to kill them all / Victim of what said should be / A servant 'til I fall."


9.- Rockin' In The Free World - Neil Young (1989)

Esta canción es una protesta hacia el gobierno del presidente George Bush y hacia las palabras del líder iraní, el Ayatollah Musavi Khomeini en las que se refiere a USA como el "Gran Satan". El cantautor escribió la letra a partir de la frase que su guitarrista le dió, la misma que sirvió de título final. Una parte de la letra clama:

"There's a lot of people saying / We'd better off dead / Don't feel like Satan / But I am to them / So I try to forget it / Any way I can."


10.- Masters Of War - Bob Dylan (1963)

El cantante y compositor norteamericano de música Folk, Bob Dylan, da su voz de protesta en ésta canción, por las armas nucleares creadas en los 60s y utilizadas en la llamada "Guerra Fría" entre USA y Rusia. Así lo describe en las primeras líneas:

"Come you masters of war / You that build the big guns / You that build the death planes / You that build all the bombs / You that hide behind walls / You that hide behind desks / I just want you to know / I can see through your masks."

SCORPIONS - TOP 5


Hacemos un nuevo Top 5, esta vez dedicado al grupo alemán Scorpions. Su bajista Francis Buchholz falleció de cáncer el 22 de enero, a la edad de 71 años.


1.- Rock You Like A Hurricane (1984)

Scorpions es una banda alemana de Hard-Rock nacida en 1965 en la ciudad de Hanover. A pesar de su larga trayectoria, tuvo su mayor popularidad entre las décadas de los 80s y 90s. Este single fue su primer gran éxito internacional, llegando a posicionarse -por ejemplo- en el casillero 25 de la lista Hot 100 de la revista norteamericana Billboard.


2.- Still Loving You (1984)

Esta balada de un romance sin fin, alcanzó el puesto 14 en el ranking alemán. En USA, su máxima posición fue la 64.


3.- Wind Of Change (1991)

El álbum número 11 del grupo, "Crazy World" fue el más exitoso. Esta canción llegó a liderar la lista alemana y otras listas europeas. La letra que habla acerca de la tensa situación mundial ante la caída del comunismo, fue inspirada en la visita a Rusia que hizo el quinteto para una presentación en un Festival en Moscú a mediados de 1989.


4.- Send Me An Angel (1991)

Fue el segundo gran éxito del undécimo LP. Se ubicó en el casillero 5 de la lista alemana, 27 en la británica y 44 en la norteamericana.


5.- You And I (1996)

Su álbum "Pure Instinct" es el que más baladas contiene. Este fue su primer single, el mismo que se posicionó en la casilla 22 del ranking alemán. También fue el último en obtener una posición tan alta.

PEACE SONG 2

 Hace más de una década, publicamos una pequeña lista de canciones protesta o "Anti-War Songs". Nosotros las denominamos "Peace Songs".

En esta ocasión, hacemos una nueva lista con 20 canciones pero, guiados por su letra y fecha de lanzamiento.

1.- Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival (1969)

"Some folks inherit star-spangled eyes / They send you down to war / And when you ask 'em How much should we give? / They only answer, "More, more, more"."


2.- Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones (1969)

"Oh, see the fire's sweepin' /Our streets today / Burns like a red coal carpet / Mad bull lost its way."


3.- War - Edwin Starr (1970)

7.- It's A Mistake - Men At Work (1982)

8.- For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica (1984)

9.- The War Song - Culture Club (1984)

10.- Land Of Confusion - Genesis (1986)

16.- Something To Believe In - Poison (1990)

17.- Heal The World - Michael Jackson (1991)

18.- Too Young To Die - Jamiroquai (1993)

TOP 5 - POPULAR LIVE SONGS

1.- Show Me The Way - Peter Frampton
Aunque fue originalmente grabado en estudio, este tema es más popular debido a su versión en vivo. El músico Peter Frampton también cuenta con otro tema de similar popularidad, el cual se encuentra también en su álbum "Frampton Comes Alive" de 1976.




2.- I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick
El grupo norteamericano Cheap Trick grabó este tema en un estudio en 1977. Sin embargo, pasó desapercibido tanto para críticos como para el público en general. Fue la versión en vivo, extraída de su concierto en Japón en 1979 la que los hizo famosos fuera de tierras locales.




3.- Live Is Life - Opus
Una canción catalogada como "One Hit Wonder", pero en vivo. El quinteto austriaco Opus, interpretó este tema en uno de sus conciertos en 1984 y en la grabación se puede escuchar incluso al público corear junto al grupo. Fue el único mayor éxito de Opus a nivel internacional.




4.- Moses - Coldplay
El grupo británico Coldplay, incluyó este tema en sus conciertos en Sydney en 2003. De estos conciertos se editó el álbum "Coldplay Live 2003". La canción "Moses" fue su único single, del cual además, no existe grabación en estudio.




5.- Give Peace A Chance - John Lennon
Durante su trayectoria, The Beatles grabaron algunas canciones con ayuda de público o en vivo. John Lennon hizo algo similar aunque de forma más "casera" durante su estadía en Canadá en 1969. Sucedió mientras realizaba su singular protesta llamada "Bed-In". Es así que el 1 de junio de 1969 y en compañía de periodistas y algunos famosos, graba "Give Peace A Chance" en una de las habitaciones del "Queen Elizabeth Hotel".
